- At the beginning Venus is a story of friendship. The kind of crazy idea that pops up around
a good glass of wine : “What if we bought some vines to make our own wine together?” The
dream comes true at the end of 2002. The group of friends chooses to buy vines in the
Roussillon region. This terroir is not the most famous but shows a great potential. The
ambition is high : crafting the best terroir wines.
In 2015, the winery acquires 15 organically grown hectares of vines. It is decided to start the
conversion of the whole vinyard to organic farming.
The winery now spreads over 34 hectares, and is composed with many different plots, all
different in sizes and exposures, revealing the great complexity of our terroir. The whole
production is certified organic farming and all the grapes are hand picked.
The winery is in Maury, Pyrénées Orientales (66). This little wine village is set 40 kms from
the Mediterranean sea and 70 kms from the Spanish border.
A few vines are planted in Maury (for the sweet wines) but most of the vinyard is planted
higher in Saint Paul de Fenouillet, a small village on the heights of the Agly Valley (Valley of
the Eagle in catalan).
The soils are mainly composed with black schist rocks.
The vines are planted on hillsides that reach elevation from 300 to 500 meters. They are
surrounded by the Pyrenees on one side, and the Corbières on the other side. These
mountains form a wide corridor for our local wind called “Tramontane”, that blows 300 days
a year.
The plots are surrounded by thyme, rosemary, olive trees and almond trees.
Altitude, wind and local flora make this high valley a paradox where southern vinyard can
rhyme with freshness and delicacy
