Domaine Paul Meunier
Information
- Description
- We own 15 hectares of land in the upper Fenouillèdes region, a land characterized by its harsh climate and wild terrain. Since we believe that vines are an integral part of the natural world, we have chosen to maintain only 8 hectares of meticulously selected vineyards.
The remaining land, often within the same plot, has been replanted with hedgerows, meadows, woodlands, and fruit trees: olive, pistachio, apricot, mulberry, and others. Their presence has a cooling effect on the soil, their shade protects both the fruit and the people, mycorrhizal fertilization promotes water retention in the soil, and pollarding allows for very localized soil amendment. Their shade reduces evapotranspiration, and their mycorrhizal properties encourage water to rise to the vines. Here, water is becoming increasingly scarce, and when it does fall, it's often in large quantities. We've implemented a system of basins on embankments and slow-moving vegetation between the rows of vines to promote infiltration.
This diversification is, for us, one of the keys to the evolution of the vineyard to adapt to climate change. Working with animals is also essential to our agronomic approach. Donkeys, pigs, and chickens, among others, are the ideal solution for grazing, removing grass without disturbing the soil, and preserving soil structure while enriching it, thus benefiting the plant. All while retaining the trace elements necessary for the plant.
