CHATEAU RIVES-BLANQUES
Information
- Description
- Since 2021, the Rives-Blanques estate has been under the stewardship of the Bories family, who took over from the previous owners with a shared passion for exceptional white wines and a deep respect for this remarkable terroir.
Located in the heart of the Cépie terroir, Rives-Blanques sits at 350 meters above sea level in the foothills of the Pyrenees, just outside the historic town of Limoux in southwestern France. This elevated location offers stunning views of the snow-dusted peaks that gave the estate its name, and provides the cool climate essential for crafting elegant, balanced white wines.
With 18 hectares under vine, Rives-Blanques is devoted exclusively to white wines, making it one of the rarest and most distinctive domaines in the south of France. Here, Mediterranean sunshine is tempered by cool oceanic breezes, and the high elevation preserves natural acidity and finesse. The result: white wines of purity, energy, and precision.
The estate is farmed organically, with a deep commitment to biodynamic practices—an approach that strengthens the natural vitality of the soils and enhances the expressiveness of the wines. This philosophy is especially important for white wines, where clarity, freshness, and the subtle reflection of terroir are key to quality and character.
Rives-Blanques is part of the Limoux appellation, a region shaped by four unique terroirs. The estate lies in the Mediterranean zone, to the east of Limoux, where rainfall averages 650 mm/year and the maritime influence encourages early ripening. Each year, this is where the first grapes are harvested, a testament to the vitality of the land.
The estate also plays a leading role in preserving and promoting Mauzac, a rare and ancient white grape grown in Limoux for over 700 years. Unrelated to any other known variety, Mauzac is unique to this region and protected under the Limoux AOP, the only appellation in the Languedoc that allows 100% Mauzac wines. In 2020, a key Rives-Blanques parcel, planted with 60- to 80-year-old vines, was transformed into a living conservatory. Diseased vines were replaced with 4,000 young plants, grafted from ten historic clones preserved by the Mauzac Conservatory in Limoux. Today, Rives-Blanques stands as the largest center of Mauzac genetic diversity—a custodian of heritage and a pioneer of its future.
