- Description
- The sea has always been part of our life and our profession. A passion that led us to “put down roots” on the island of Sant’Antioco, in the far south-west of beautiful and wild Sardinia.
An island within an island that, until the 1980s, was literally covered with Carignano vineyards, a grape variety that may have arrived with the Phoenicians. Bush-trained vines growing all the way to the beaches, among dunes and junipers, on sandy soils and ridges swept year-round by strong mistral winds.
Vines that have always been grown on their own roots, as this is one of the few areas in Europe where the devastating plague of phylloxera did not destroy centuries of human labor.
Only in a few places, like this island, have sandy soils preserved vines with their original “own-rooted” systems, allowing the pure and ancient flavor of European grapes to be expressed.
This winemaking tradition, however, largely disappeared from the late 1980s onward, when low yields began to clash with market logic. Here and there, century-old vineyards survived solely thanks to the passion and determination of the island’s elders.
From one of these vineyards, inherited from our grandfather Massimino and our father Gianni, came our desire to give this tradition a future. The encounter with Renato, who has always nurtured a passion for fine natural wine, with Luca Mercenaro, a great expert in Sardinian vines and wines—whom fate “assigned” to us as a neighboring grower—and with Antonio Manca, a young and talented winemaker, gave us the strength to embark on this mad adventure.
Because only by being a little crazy can one restore century-old vineyards, “fight” against the mistral and sandy soils, and obtain a modern wine from an ancient grape variety.
