Meyer Eugène (domaine)
Information
- Description
- Domaine Eugène Meyer is a family-run wine estate located in Bergholtz, near Guebwiller in southern Alsace. Winegrowers have been passed down through the family from father to son since 1620.
The estate currently covers 17 hectares. The vines enjoy excellent exposure (south-east) and benefit from a superb microclimate conducive to optimal ripening, producing wines of exceptional quality with a rich body and intense fruitiness.
After suffering severe poisoning and paralysis of the optic nerve in 1969, Eugène Meyer decided to adopt biodynamic farming methods based on the principles of Rudolf Steiner.
At the estate, biodynamics is much more than an agricultural technique: it is a way of life that respects nature, the earth, life, and people. Biodynamics enables the elimination of all synthetic chemicals used for plant protection and soil fertilisation. Biodynamic preparations, applied regularly in homeopathic doses, strengthen the vines' resistance, intensify the soil's vitality and restore disturbed balances. The soil is fertilised with compost energised by six herbal remedies: yarrow, chamomile, nettle, oak bark, dandelion and valerian.
Above all else, a great wine is born in the vineyards. It is the result of the terroir, the vintage, and the care given to the vines throughout the year. François, who has managed the estate since 1990, and his son Xavier, who joined in 2018, use biodynamic methods to help the vines find their balance. When in harmony with their environment, the vines express all the qualities of their terroir.
The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, vinification is natural and traditional, and the wines are fermented using indigenous yeasts . During vinification, François and Xavier simply guide nature gently, ensuring that the wines reflect the qualities of the grapes and the terroir.
The estate is ECOCERT and DEMETER certified.
