Abbaye Sylva Plana
Information
- Description
- The Sylva Plana Abbey is the monastic barn founded in 1139 by Cistercian monks from the Sylvanès Abbey in Aveyron. The walls of the abbey have not withstood the ravages of time but the vineyard called the “plain of salvation” continues to offer its best.
We proudly defend this 900-year-old heritage whose adjoining vines are part of the composition of our 54 hectares of organically farmed vineyards.
The estate also diversified in the 2010s, with the creation of its restaurant and guest rooms.
Located in the town of Laurens, 30 km from the shores of the Mediterranean, the Abbaye Sylva Plana estate stretches like an amphitheater in a still preserved nature.
Its altitude varies from 300 to 450 m, the view from the Montagne Noire to the peaks of the Pyrenees is breathtaking.
The estate includes 54 hectares of vines divided between red wine grape varieties (Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre) and white wine (Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Vermentino and Viognier).
Our vines are exposed south, in contour lines, planted on schist, clay-limestone and marble soils. They experience dry summers and are mainly swept by the north wind.
A short recap of the year…..
The year 2023 was marked by extremes, great contrasts in terms of weather.
The Sylva Plana Abbey, from June to October, has undergone strong thermal amplitudes, humidity, cool nights to very hot days.
The 2024 vintage will therefore be a vintage of great contrast.
Our organic approach….
Our respect for the environment comes from our desire to make the best possible wines. We believe that organic and biodynamic practices allow the full expression of the aromatic profile of our wines and thus make them a more faithful reflection of their schist terroir.
All our vines come from mass selections (i.e. cuttings of the best old vines), we practice organic viticulture and have been certified in Organic Agriculture since 2008.
