Vinification charter to reinforce regulations

Since 1991, vinification is excluded from European regulations governing organic products, mainly because of the lack of a schedule of conditions. For the time being, certifications concern only grapes.

In order to advance with regulations and provide consumers with the guarantee of a totally organic wine, from the vineyard to the bottle, industry professionals got together to draw up and implement a charter of organic wines, the application of which is being co-ordinated nationally by the FNIVAB (France’s interprofessional federation of organic wines).

This charter is governed by private law. It calls for:
- The minimal and controlled amount of preferably pure oenological products
- A positive list of oenological products and techniques
- The traceability of operations, particularly in ‘mixed’ situations (organic and non-organic cultivation)
- The absence of use of GMO products or those derived from GMO methods
- Rules governing the transport, bottling and packaging of wine
- Reduced maximal doses of SO2 compared with those authorised by European regulations.

This charter concerns all operators in the sector, and is subject to verification by the same authorised body that issues vineyard certification.

You’ll be able to find supporters of the charter during the fair, thanks to a special logo and a specific reference in the wine fair catalogue.

The Inter-professional Association of Organic Wines from Languedoc & Roussillon (AIVB-LR) was created in 1991. AIVB-LR is meant for all the growers raising wines obtained with grapes issued from organic agriculture, as of the first year of conversion. It is also meant for all the wine merchants and wine brokers of the organic wine sector.

The objectives of the AIVB-LR are:

Promoting the wines from organic agriculture and defending the 'Organic Agriculture' label,
Organizing and marketing this sector,
Setting up rules of wine-making,
Developing a high-quality vine growing,
Ensuring different services to its members.

  Few actions :

In 1993, set up of the Millésime Bio Trade Fair meant for the wine purchasers and opened to overseas countries. Ever since this International Trade Fair experiences an increasing success each year.
Attending different exhibitions such as ViniSud, SIAL…
Organizing an inter-regional competition between wines from organic agriculture (in partnership with the AVAP (Association of Agrobiologic Wine Growers from Provence) and the GRAB (Group of Research in Organic Agriculture) two associations from Provence, Alps and the French Riviera),
Welcoming missions of foreign purchasers.

What is a wine obtained with grapes issued from organic agriculture?

It is a wine obtained with vineyards cultivated according to the European Regulation (CEE 2092/91).
The vineyards must be :

fertilized with the help of manures and composts so as to stimulate the organic activity of the grounds and thus underline the soils' typicity,
protected against the insects and the diseases which may devastate the grapes with the help of simple salts (sulphur, copper), natural products (seaweeds, vegetal extracts) or modern techniques of organic protection,
mechanically weeded.

The production procedures of the grapes are controlled by an accredited organization (Ecocert, Qualité france, Ulase…). The wine making strictly limits the use of additives and particularly of the SO2. The wine grower is concerned about producing an authentic and a high quality wine.

Services provided to the AIVB-LR members :
